Youth Sailing

Long Beach Yacht Club has a rich history of competitive sailors that have grown through our renowned Youth Sailing Program. We offer year-round Youth Sailing classes for sailors ages 5-17. LBYC Youth Sailing has long been an overall focal point of the LBYC board of governance which enables us to provide the highest level of facilities, equipment, and instruction available. Our mission is to promote and teach the sport of sailing and seamanship to the youth of the Club. In addition to teaching sailing skills, the program emphasizes sportsmanship, life skills, teamwork and an appreciation for fair competition. Our staff are all US Sailing Certified Instructors as well as CPR and First Aid certified.

The various programs offered at the club cater to ALL levels of sailors whether they have no days or years experience on the water. Our Sea Otter program is the entry level point for students of the sport ages 5-7. We have experienced sailors and classroom teachers for these sailors to progress as quickly as possible to the Sabot Novice program. After one season of Sea Otters the students will be ready for the Novice class instilling habits in these young sailors to sail on their own by the end of the program. One summer as a Novice and the self sufficient sailors will be eligible to graduate into the Intro to Racing class (Naples Sabot). By now your child should be regularly signing up for regattas within the C3 class and be learning the fundamentals of sailboat racing. More advanced classroom and on the water instruction, emphasizing boat handling, will prepare the athletes for the Sabot Race Team. The Race Team program (C2 or higher) is where all the fundamental skills will be polished and sailors will have a life-long foundation of knowledge. The Race Team allows the kids to become leaders, remain competitive at the national level, climb up the leader boards, and see how hard they can push themselves racing sailboats. Beyond the Sabot Race Team there is the High School Sailing/Double Handed program which is a great pipeline to have access to some college recruiters and compete against some of the best sailors in the United States. Private campaigns are always encouraged in this sport at this age, but the benefit of the High School Program is that it is designed to have established curriculums for beginners and advanced teen sailors (8th-12th grade).

New as of 2024, the Long Beach Yacht Club has also formed a strategic partnership with One United in order to provide our membership with access to a network of coaches and athletes on a National scale. For those who are seeking the most competitive one-design racing available, this will serve as a gateway to the highest level coaching and training opportunities across a number of classes and disciplines.
